German Riesling and Buttered Noodles with Smoked Sausage

Updated: Feb 1, 2020

Tonight’s Wine Adventure is truly an adventure for me. I was in the mood for a German Riesling and needed to pair it with something quick and easy. (It’s Monday and I worked all day.) I decided on Buttered Noodles with Smoked Sausage. I was not 100% convinced that this pairing would work well. I assessed the risk of it not working and decided that if it didn’t work out, I could always store the food away for another day and just drink the wine. Fortunately the wine and food ended up pairing rather nicely together.
My wine of choice tonight is Selbach Oster Riesling Kabinett 2017 from Mosel, Germany. With a low alcohol content of 9.5%, this wine perfect for sipping on a Monday night when your work week is just starting. Lower alcohol content is an indication of a sweeter wine. When yeast is added to wine grape juice, it converts the sugar into alcohol. If the process is stopped before all the residual sugar is gone – it results in a sweeter wine. With 30 grams of residual sugar per liter, this wine is classified as semi-sweet. It doesn’t have the overpowering sugary, syrupy taste like some dessert wines. But it is also not so dry that you feel like you are drinking chalk dust.
The winemaker describes this Riesling as having flavors of slate, lime, apple, butter vanilla, rich, almost chewy, earthiness, and great depth. My take on the wine – I could detect a strong aroma of wet slate and citrus with flavors of ripe green apple or ripe pear. The finish was butter like. Because the wine came from Germany, I could not stop thinking of cabbage and noodle recipes. Since I did not have any cabbage, I settled for Buttered Noodles with Smoked Sausage instead. Just prepare extra broad or wide noodles and mix it with smoked sausage. Here is my recipe version.

Ingredients:
No Yolks Extra Broad Egg Noodles
Eckrich Smoked Sausage made with Pork, Turkey and Beef
Chicken Bullion to taste
Butter

Prepare:
Slice the smoked sausage up and fry in a pan.
Prepare egg noodles in a pot of boiling water and chicken bouillon.
After egg noodles are done, drain and place back in pot. Add butter and smoked sausage. Mix well and serve.
I hope you enjoyed tonight’s wine adventure. Thanks for following! Cheers!
